Powell Scholar and Civil Engineering major, Grant Hollis, reached the final round of the Rhodes Scholar competition in fall, 2009. While he was not among the 32 students nationwide chosen to study at Oxford, Grant was characteristically upbeat. "It was a great experience to meet people who have achieved at the same level as I have, but in different areas," said Hollis. "The most important thing I learned from the interview is to be comfortable and be yourself." Hollis will begin studying for a masters degree in structural engineering in the fall. His can-do personality, academic prowess and athletic talent suggest a brilliant future for this Pacific graduate. And, Hollis left his fellow Powell Scholars with a challenge: "We still need someone to win from Pacific!"
Benjamin Alldritt, a Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Management student, was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship. Nearly 9,000 students applied for the prestigious scholarship that year.
Alldritt, a Sacramento native who graduated from Pacific in May 2010, was awarded a Fulbright for his research involving the design and construction of a new exoskeleton system that allows paraplegics to operate their legs without external supports such as crutches. He used the award during the 2010-2011 academic year for research at HAMK University of Applied Sciences in Hämeenlinna, Finland.
