Bea Woods, a sophomore Powell Scholar majoring in English, played a key role in bringing The Society of English Cohorts to Pacific.
The Society of English Cohorts is a new English club on campus; it started in Fall 2010. I was part of the original Executive Board, in the position of Treasurer. SEC is open to people of all majors and minors, as long as everyone shares a love of English!
Senior Powell Scholar Elizabeth Youngberg is the current Vice President of ASUOP and is highly involved my many organizations on compus.
Powell Scholar Alex Edfort, a junior majoring in Sports Management, is co-captain of the golf team. In 2010, he qualified for the 110th US Amateur Championship in University Place, WA.
I had to place top 4 in a local qualifier in New Jersey for the chance to compete at this tournament. The qualifier had more than 80 players from various states and countries. I tied for fourth in the qualifier with two other competitors and went into a sudden death playoff for the final spot. I outlasted them eventually winning it on the fourth playoff hole. So, that is how I got to the US Amateur. Once there, the format was as follows. All 312 players played two rounds of stroke play. The top 64 finishers would advance to match play and would face off bracket style until the winner was determined. So, I played two rounds of stroke play and did very well. I shot 73-78 on two tough golf courses. I tied for 75th, one stroke out of making the cut for the top 64 and the match play. The one course we played, Chambers Bay, was the longest course in USGA history. And the other one was no walk in the park either. I was extremely pleased with how I did and looking back there were many instances where I could have saved a shot here and a shot there and it is always a story of what could have been. However, overall, it was a fun experience and I had the chance to test my game against the best amateur golfers in the country and I did not fall short by much. Making the match play would have been an amazing accomplishment, especially because it was only my first US Amateur.
Powell Scholars Mike Abram and Alicia Still are president and secretary of the Math Club respectively. Last year they hosted the event Math and Origami, an evening of exploring the intersection of mathematics with the Japanese art of paper-folding.
