The University of the Pacific uses the online learning Management System (LMS) called Sakai Collaboration and Learning Environment (CLE). Sakai is an open source project created specifically to address the needs of academic users, create software tools, and share best practices among Consortium of academic institutions.
The videos below provide an overview of various aspects of Sakai. The first video, "introduction to Sakai" gives a little background on Sakai as well as an explanation for how "my workspace" interacts with the rest of your Sakai sites and how to log in to Sakai. The second, much longer, video, "overview of 'my workspace' in Sakai" goes into much more detail about how to manage your profile, quick links and my site links, the consolidated calendar, and navigation bars. The other videos will give more detailed information on the various tools within Sakai that you may want to use for various tasks from keeping your gradebook to communicating with students and conducting quizzes and tests. These five videos together should provide a broad enough overview to get started on your own Sakai course.

Introduction to Sakai
This video gives a brief overview to the Sakai CLE framework. It discusses how "my workspace" works in conjunction with site and resource organization. It also provides a brief demonstration on how to login to the Sakai CLE.
Overview of "My Workspace" in Sakai
This video gives a much more detailed overview of "my workspace." It discusses the differences and similarities between the student and instructor workspace, provides an overview of the layout, including the modules and the navigation bar, configuring the quicklinks, overview of private resources, setting up your personal profiles and preferences, and creating your own site.
Managing Site Content with the Resources Tool
The resources tool is the backbone of any Sakai site. This video tutorial will cover creating folders, uploading and downloading content, creating citation lists, linking to HTML pages, and including text documents. Additionally, the video will look at resource management including setting permissions, reordering, moving, and removing folders and files. You will also be walk through the process of accessing your resources from other Sakai sites.
Communicating with Students in Sakai
The primary purpose of a Sakai CLE site is communication. While most of the tools in Sakai deal with communication, this tutorial looks at a few of the most common tools the professors often use. The video looks at some basic user interface issues, such as how the landing pages set up, effective use of the announcements tool, setting up the syllabus tool, sending and receiving e-mail from within Sakai, messaging, and some things to consider when choosing between the two types of discussion forums that Sakai has to offer.
Using Sakai Forums
Forums are one of the most common tools used to get students interacting with both the material and each other. The video below discusses some strategies to use in your Forums, as well as tips on how to grade these conversations, especially if there are a lot of responses.
Overview of the Test and Quizzes tool in Sakai
While tests and quizzes may be conducted in class and entered into the gradebook directly, the test and quizzes tool is a powerful option that allows for tests, quizzes, and surveys to be conducted online outside of class. This video looks at how tests can be made, and the variety of tools that Sakai offers to help you with everything from creating question pools to security and time limits.
Using Feedback as an alternative to Gradebook
Sometimes the grading structure in the class is too complicated to easily replicate in Sakai's gradebook, or for some it's just easier to use an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of grades. But an Excel spreadsheet it is difficult to share with students due to FERPA requirements, and e-mailing students individually may take a long time. The feedback tool allows you to upload your gradebook from a spreadsheet into Sakai so that students have access to their grades in a format similar to the gradebook.
Using YouTube in Sakai
This video shows how to embed video in Sakai, however, the embed process can be used to link to a variety of resources from docs to audio files. The advantage of letting students see the video within Sakai, rather than following an external link to another page or having to download a large video file, is discussed.
Using the Podcasting Tool
Podcasting is a great way to distribute audio podcasts as well as video lectures or pdf documents. With a little planning, much of your course could be handled through the podcasting tool if you want. However, most instructors prefer to use it as a convenient way to upload and distribute audio and video lectures. Here is a brief tutorial on using your iPhone to create and upload your course podcast.

Elluminate live! is a webinar tool with an Sakai that allows the instructor to conduct live synchronous events with their students. This video covers a variety of features that instructors should be familiar with for their very first session including scheduling an event, recording a session, conducting a poll, and loading a PowerPoint.

This video serves as instructions for students to access the Elluminate Live! webinar tool. Because the webinar uses Java, and is not conducted inside the web browser, this video is meant as a resource that instructors can give to their students to assist them in accessing the event.
