Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Invites Applications for Dissertation Fellowships in Education
Deadline: February 3, 2012
http://www.jkcf.org/scholarships/graduate-scholarships/jack-kent-cooke-dissertation-fellowship-award/
The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation works to help high-achieving, low-income students - from middle school to graduate school - reach their full potential through education.
The foundation created its dissertation fellowship program in 2010 to advance its understanding of the factors and contexts that help low-income students overcome personal adversity and challenging socioeconomic circumstances to excel academically. The foundation plans to use this knowledge to design programs and interventions that help more low-income students identified as high-achieving in their primary and secondary school years to sustain their achievement levels through college and beyond.
The fellowships are intended to support doctoral students for work done after the successful defense of their dissertation proposals. Although applicants must be candidates for a doctoral degree at a graduate school in the United States, they need not be U.S. citizens. Applications are encouraged from a variety of disciplines, including but not limited to education, sociology, economics, psychology, statistics, and psychometrics.
The fellowship is a one-time award of up to $25,000, which may be used for a period of not less than nine months and up to eighteen months. Four fellowships will be awarded.

Childrens Literature Association - Hannah Beiter Graduate Student Research Grants
Synopsis:
The Hannah Beiter Graduate Student Research Grants were established to honor the memory of Dr. Hannah Beiter, a long-time supporter of student participation in the Children's Literature Association. The Beiter Grants have a combined maximum fund of up to $5,000 per year, and individual awards may range from $500 to $1,500, based on the number and needs of the winning applicants. The grants are awarded for proposals of original scholarship with the expectation that the undertaking will lead to publication or a conference presentation and contribute to the field of children's literature criticism.
Beiter grant funds are not intended as income to assist in the completion of a graduate degree (e.g., applied to tuition), but as support for research that may be related to the dissertation or master's thesis. The award may be used to purchase supplies and materials (e.g., books, videos, equipment), as research support (photocopying, etc.), or to underwrite travel to special collections or libraries. Winners must either be members of the Children's Literature Association or join the association before they receive any funds. Winners should acknowledge ChLA in any publication resulting from the award.
Deadline: Feb. 1, 2012.

AIR Research and Dissertation Grants
OVERVIEW FOR 2012
With support from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), and the National Postsecondary Education Cooperative (NPEC), the Association for Institutional Research (AIR) operates two grant programs that support research on a wide range of issues of critical importance to U.S. higher education. The program has two separate purposes:
- NSF and NCES support grants aim to increase the number of researchers using national datasets and demonstrate the contribution that these datasets make to the national base of knowledge on higher education policy, theory, and practice.
- The NPEC funding supports grants that increase the understanding and knowledge of a specific issue area identified by NPEC. This year, the focus will be "Exploring Postsecondary Non-Degree Programs."
Two levels of grants are supported:
- Research Grants: Faculty and practitioners are eligible for research grants of up to $40,000 for one year of independent research. (Note: These research grants are not available to students). All grant recipients must be affiliated with a U.S. postsecondary institution or relevant non-profit higher education organization.
- Dissertation Grants: Doctoral students are eligible for dissertation grants of up to $20,000 for one year to support dissertation research and writing under the guidance of a faculty dissertation advisor.
To qualify for funding, proposal submissions must meet one or more of the following criteria:
- Use data from one or more of the national datasets of NCES and NSF- Research topics may cover a wide range of policy- or practice-related issues. For a list of previously funded topics visit www.airweb.org/grants . Applicants must include the analysis of data from at least one NSF or NCES dataset in the project. (See NSF/NCES Datasets for more information.) Additional large-scale, nationally representative datasets may be used in conjunction with the obligatory NSF or NCES dataset.
- Address the NPEC Focus Topic: "Exploring Postsecondary Non-Degree Programs" - Proposals should focus on postsecondary non-degree programs, their role in higher education, and appropriate measures of student success and institutional effectiveness for these programs. The analyses can focus on federal, state, or regional data and does not require the use of NCES or NSF databases. Nonetheless, the results of the research should have some applicability to IPEDS data collection efforts. (See NPEC FOCUS Topic for more information.)
Proposals may only be submitted electronically. The deadline for proposal submission is January 6, 2012. Applicants will be notified of funding decisions by March 23, 2012. Funding will be available starting May 1, 2012. The proposal submission period for 2012 will open November 16, 2011
