Sacramento Experience Internship Program

Hillary Pritchard and Gavin Newsom
Sacramento Experience Intern, Hillary Pritchard and Lieutenant Governor of California, Gavin Newsom

Dr. Condon and Jacoby Interns
Former Program Director, Dr. George Condon, and Sacramento Experience interns

Taking advantage of our proximity to Sacramento—the California state capital—Pacific offers the Sacramento Experience program in which students serve as interns in government, lobbying or non-profit organizations. They also attend a weekly Sacramento Public Affairs seminar that focuses on California state politics and public policy. Many guest speakers who work in government or public policy institutions are invited to the seminar to share their insights.

Program logistics:

  • Internships run from January through April.
  • Students serve for full days on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and transportation is provided to and from Pacific.
  • Students receive four units of credit for the internship and two units for the seminar.

While most of the internships are unpaid, some of them have led to paid internships during the summer—or even permanent full-time positions upon graduation.

Students' responsibilities are diverse and may include researching issues, attending hearings, writing reports on pending legislation, media relations and planning events. Students are expected to be full-fledged participants in the offices they work for, and that also includes performing routine tasks such as filing and photocopying.

Recruiting for the internships starts in the fall, and selections are made in October. Students who wish to apply must write an essay explaining how such an internship fits with their goals and what they can contribute to the agencies where they may be assigned. About 6 to 10 students are selected each year.
