Patti McCarthy, PhD, MFA is a Visiting Assistant Professor teaching film production, film studies, and screenwriting at the University of the Pacific, Stockton, CA. She holds a PhD (Critical Studies) and MFA (Film Production) from University of Southern California, School of Cinematic Arts. 

Prior to teaching, she worked for producer Ray Stark as Head of Development at RASTAR Productions at Sony Pictures Entertainment and was involved in projects such as: Harriet the SpyTo Gillian on Her 37th BirthdayRandom HeartsAmerican History X, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Dr. McCarthy recently co-produced the documentary film, Clint Eastwood presents Dave Brubeck: In His Own Sweet Way, with producer/director, Bruce Ricker and executive producer Clint Eastwood. She also recently produced, with the help of Lucasfilm and her film students at UOP and USC (who directed the films and acted as crew), a series of short, biographical documentary films about George Lucas for the Historical Graffiti Cruise Route in Modesto, CA.  

She is a frequent panelist at the University Film & Video Association and has been a keynote speaker for many events and conferences, including Star Wars 30th Anniversary Conference and Wizard World Comic Con, in Sacramento and San Jose where she recently discussed her book, The Lucas Effect: George Lucas and the New Hollywood (Teneo Press, 2014), acted as film festival judge and Q & A moderator, and presented her work on "The Heroine's Journey," that was filmed live and currently available for viewing on ConTv.com. Her essay, "The Heroine's Journey: Reclaiming the Feminine," was recently accepted by McFarland Press for inclusion in an anthology, Adoring Outlander: Essays on Fandom, Genre, and Female Readership, for Spring 2016. She recently signed a contract with McFarland Press for a book,Outlander and the Heroine's Journey, due to be published Spring 2017.
