Why did you decide to pursue a Master of Arts degree in Food Studies?
I wanted to broaden my knowledge of the current state of food and develop my own perspective of what food should be in our society.

What topic have you found most compelling in your studies?
I can't get enough of my Food Writing class! There's more than cookbooks, blogs, and Bon Appétit; we've looked at memoirs, hard-hitting journalism, award-winning restaurant reviews, self-published magazines, and more.

What is something that has surprised you about the field of Food Studies?
Honestly, I'm usually not drawn to academic research, so I've been surprised to find a lot of Food Studies research very accessible and fun to read. It's inspiring to see the creative ways people examine food, and the equally creative sources they use.

What is one of your favorite San Francisco food experiences?
Getting two Hog Island oysters at the San Francisco Ferry Building and eating them outside, overlooking the Bay. I do this whenever I come back from the airport and wait for the ferry. It's a little indulgence that says "Welcome back to San Francisco!"

How do you envision putting this degree to work?
I'd like to combine my marketing experience and food studies knowledge to work toward a day when "food business" isn't automatically associated with "evil" or "villainous."
