Asian Language Programs

Asian Language and Studies Major (Chinese and Japanese Concentrations)


This major allows students to develop their language skills in Chinese or Japanese while simultaneously gaining significant knowledge about the Asian context. Students share a strong interdisciplinary curriculum and choose to concentrate their language study in Chinese or Japanese. The non-language curriculum will be taught in English and includes film, literature, history, politics and religion. The major requires one semester of study abroad in China/Taiwan or Japan. The minimum number of units for the major is 34.

Required language courses:

Language requirement begins with the intermediate level; at least one semester (or a summer with a minimum of 8 weeks) of language requirement must be completed in China or Taiwan.

CHIN 23 Chinese Through Culture/the 3rd semester (4)
CHIN 25 Chinese Through Culture/4th semester (4)
CHIN 125 Advanced Chinese I (4)
CHIN 126 Advanced Chinese II (4)
One Semester of Study Abroad in China or Taiwan (8-12)

Four Courses from the following:

No more than two equivalent courses (as determined by the adviser) may be completed while studying in China/Taiwan.

Chinese Minor


Six courses (24 units) to include CHIN 11a, 11b, 23, and 25. In addition, two courses from ASIA 120 Asian Cinemas, ASIA 124 Society, Gender & Culture in E. Asia, ASIA 130 East Asian Literature, HIST 30 East Asian Civilization I, HIST 31 East Asian Civilization II, HIST 141 Pre-Modern Chinese History, HIST 142 Modern Chinese History, RELI 135 Asian Religious Traditions, POLS 152 Politics of Asia, & REL 152 Confucian Traditions. Study abroad in China or Taiwan is strongly encouraged. Students who acquired competency in Chinese prior to University study may be exempted by the Modern Language and Literature Department from a maximum of 8 units.
