Spanish Programs

The curriculum in Spanish includes beginning, intermediate and advanced level classes for both native and non-native speakers of Spanish. Spanish linguistics, Hispanic literature and civilization courses are complemented by experiential learning opportunities. All courses are given entirely in Spanish.

The B.A. in Spanish has three concentrations:

1) The Hispanic Language and Literature Concentration

2) The Spanish Pedagogy Concentration (Students seeking a teaching credential must complete the Spanish Pedagogy Concentration in addition to courses required by the School of Education)

3) Cultura y Civilización

The department also offers a minor in Spanish for students who are committed to another major track, as well as a minor in Latin American Studies.

Major Requirements for Hispanic Language and Literature Track


The student should complete a minimum of 34 units beyond the intermediate level (Spanish 25, Spanish 21b). Sixteen of the 34 units must be completed in the Modern Language and Literature Department on this campus.

Plus 8 additional upper division elective courses to bring total to 34 units.

Major Requirements for Spanish Pedogogy Track


The student should complete a minimum of 38 units beyond the intermediate level (Spanish 25, Spanish 21b) . Twenty of the 38 units must be completed in the Modern Language and Literature Department on this campus.

Plus presentation of Professional Portfolio and Exit Examination during the semester prior to graduation.

Spanish Minor


20 units beyond Spanish 23 or Spanish 21a to include the following courses or their equivalent: SPAN 101, SPAN 103, SPAN 110 or SPAN 112, SPAN 141 and elective courses (SPAN 25, SPAN 27 or any upper division Spanish course(s) to reach minimum of 20 units. Twelve of the 20 units must be taken in the Department of Modern Language and Literature. Students must demonstrate proficiency at the intermediate level before a minor will be granted.
