Keith Smith

Keith SmithIn my classes, I aim for theoretically informed and empirically grounded investigations of the origins, operation, and consequences of our political institutions.  Where possible, I run my classes as seminars instead of lectures. (I really don’t like to lecture.)  We have semi-structured conversations about the readings and how they apply to current political events.  My goals are for students to understand the works we read on their own terms, to identify their theoretical and methodological weaknesses, and to extend the ideas in new directions and to different topics.  I encourage a collegial classroom atmosphere, where everyone feels free to ask questions (simple or hard), joke around, and respectfully challenge each other.  Also, I am an avid fan of the Daily Show, the Colbert Report, and the Simpsons, and I like to include clips from these shows in class when possible.
