Special Interests

Marcia Hernandez's Special Interests
I received my BA in Sociology from UC Santa Barbara in 1994 and my doctoral from the Sociology Department at the University at Albany in 2007. My dissertation explored women's experiences in historically Black sororities. Additional research interests include investigating the experiences of women of color in academia, race and gender stereotypes in popular culture and analyzing children's culture through a race, gender and class lens. Presentations at national and regional Sociology conferences have focused on these topics.

I teach courses in the Sociology Department, the Ethnic Studies Program and the Gender Studies Program as well in the Jacoby Center for Public Service and Civic Leadership. As a part of my affiliation with the Jacoby Center I am currently a co-principal investigator on the Partnership for Assessment of Communities (PAC) that was created as a metric-tracking component of the implementation of the San Joaquin Valley Strategic Action Proposal. The primary goal of PAC is to measure the impact of the actions proposed in the Strategic Action Proposal aimed at improving the quality of life in the San Joaquin Valley.
