Whether serving academic and professional training, supporting Tiger athletics, or entertaining at University functions, Pacific Bands have always played an integral role at the University of the Pacific. Over 130 students representing 12 states, 16 academic majors, and 6 schools or colleges within the University, participate in the Pacific Bands. The program's rich history and vibrant future are dedicated to continued growth, service, and a uniquely powerful "esprit de corps" that reflect the University's commitment to topflight, student-centered education.
Symphonic Wind Ensemble
The Symphonic Wind Ensemble is comprised of our most accomplished wind, brass and percussion students. Repertoire is drawn from the standards for concert band including Hindemith's Symphony in Bb and Grainger's Lincolnshire Posy as well as transcriptions and the great wealth of contemporary music for wind ensemble. Notable works include Nigel Clarke's Samurai and Donald Grantham's Don't You See?
The Symphonic Wind Ensemble performs on campus and as University ambassadors at high schools, colleges, and professional conferences in northern California, Oregon and Washington. In December 2012, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble recorded at the Skywalker Ranch in Marin County.
Take a moment to listen to the Symphonic Wind Ensemble perform excerpts from:
- The Chimes of Liberty by Edwin Franko Goldman
- Variations on "America" by Charles Ives
- Elegy for a Young American by Ronald lo Presti
Membership totals approximately 50 and is open to all University students by audition. General Education credit is available to non-music majors who participate in the band. The Symphonic Wind Ensemble rehearses Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 12:30 p.m. to 1:50 p.m.
University Concert Band
As with Symphonic Wind Ensemble, literature for the University Concert Band comes from contemporary, transcription, and standard band repertory. Performances include music from light classics to show tunes. The band performs on-campus each semester and also hosts a concert shared with local high schools.
Membership is open to all University students. No audition is necessary and General Education credit is available to non-music major participants. The University Concert Band rehearses on Monday and Wednesday from 5:00 pm to 6:45 pm.
Pacific Pep Band
Student leadership, unequalled spirit, and great performance are the hallmarks of the 40-member Pacific Pep Band. The band plays for Women's Volleyball (two-time Division I national champs), Women's Basketball, Men's Basketball (2004-06 March-Madness participants), and at the Big West Basketball tournament in Anaheim, all of which adds up to a great college band experience. The Pacific Pep Band is not a conservatory ensemble, but is run by the Athletic Department. Although many members are conservatory students, membership is open to all University students.
