The purpose of Solo Class is to increase your understanding of music, music performance, and professional issues. Solo Class is pass/fail. To pass, you must attend the following number of events, in each of three categories:
Six Solo Classes: attendance is recorded at each solo class. If you arrive more than five minutes late, or leave early, your attendance will not count. Check the bulletin board outside James Gonzales’s office to find out if solo class is being held. Announcements will be posted each Wednesday for the following Friday. You may not count a Solo Class in which you are performing toward your total of six.
Five Conservatory Events: Conservatory Events include faculty recitals, student recitals, ensemble concerts, guest artists sponsored by the Conservatory, and selected lecturers.
Four Community Events: Community Events include, but are not limited to: Stockton Symphony concerts, Friends of Chamber Music concerts, performances of the Stockton Opera. If you have any question as to what qualifies as a community event, please ask at soloclass@pacific.edu.
Collect program and/or tickets from Conservatory and Community events to document your attendance. List them on the attached check list. And turn in the programs/tickets (originals only) with the checklist in an envelope when you have completed the requirements.
You may turn in your portfolio by April 1st for priority consideration. If there are any problems, you will be notified quickly and will have the time to correct any error. If you miss the priority deadline, the final deadline is May 1st. All portfolios should be brought to my office (Buck 213).
To request a time to perform in Solo Class, send an email to soloclass@pacific.edu with the following information (and only the following information):
Requested date
Performers names and instruments/voices
Accompanist name
Works to be performed, movements, or titles
Composer, with first name and years
Length of performance
Instructor
You must request an instructor’s permission to perform in solo class; listing the name of a faculty member means that you have received permission from that instructor. All requests must be received by the Monday preceding the requested performance date. Priority will be given to those who have not yet performed in solo class in the current semester.
If you are unable to attend any Friday Solo Class because of a class conflict, you must ask permission from the instructor, register for the second section of Solo Class, and make special arrangements with the instructor. No exceptions.
