Pacific Opera Students and Temple Israel Honored Victims and Survivors of the Holocaust
University of the Pacific's Opera Theater collaborated with Temple Israel to perform "I Never Saw Another Butterfly" for Yom HaShoah. Yom HaShoah is also known as "Holocaust Commemoration Day." It is a day of reflection for those in the Jewish community to remember family and loved ones who died because of the Nazi-organized holocaust. "I Never Saw Another Butterfly" is a play the features poems written by children of the Holocaust. The Stockton performance included texts added by local Holocaust survivors.
"The juxtaposition of the heartfelt children's poems, which express a tinge of hopefulness, is a sharp contrast to the tormented memories of those who escaped the regime's atrocities and suffered the ineffable loss of cherished family members and friends," said Jim Haffner, director of the Pacific Opera Theatre. "How one is able to keep up their hopes when surrounded by torture and death is an amazing testimonial to the resilience of spirit shown by the survivors."
