Healthcare Management Track

The Eberhardt School of Business MBA track in healthcare management will provide general management training with a focus on the dynamic and growing health sector. It equips students with a familiarity with institutions of the health sector. It offers a more thorough management background than found in many masters in health administration (MHA) programs and more health specific education than the general MBA. It is a well-accepted qualification for advancement to many of the most responsible positions in hospitals, clinics, health insurance, long term care, pharmaceuticals, medical technology, consulting, professional associations, and government service. Students take all required MBA courses and also select four courses focused on, or closely related, to the health sector. These include Health Insurance, International Healthcare Systems, Health Economics, Marketing of Services, Healthcare Law, and Health Information Systems. In addition, the required internship is expected to be based in a health-related setting.

Healthcare Management Electives:

  • BUSI 246. Marketing of Services This class explores the theory and strategies that drive service consumption. Students are exposed to the unique characteristics of marketing services that include the importance of the physical environment to service encounter success, the creation of customer satisfaction, the delivery of service quality and value, and the development of strategies to overcome service failure. Prerequisite: BUSI 211 or BUSI 255 with a "B" or better.
  • BUSI 250. Health Finance: Health Insurance A survey of the theory and practice of health insurance in the United States. Students who complete this course will understand the history and institutional framework of health insurance, will understand how health insurance operates, and will be able to assess the efficiency and equity of healthcare finance. Prerequisite: BUSI 211 or BUSI 255.
  • BUSI 251. International Healthcare Systems This course is an international overview of healthcare finance and delivery that will familiarize students with healthcare finance and delivery around the world. Students will develop critical analytical skills to enable them to compare and contrast health systems, identify relative strengths and weaknesses, and assess the possibilities for structural reform of the US healthcare system. Prerequisite BUSI 211 or 255.
  • BUSI 252. Healthcare Law Analysis and application of statutes, regulations, case law and policies affecting the health care system in the U.S. Upon completion of this course students will understand the roles of the legal, legislative and administrative systems in health care, will be able to discuss critically important legal, ethical and policy issues in health care, and will be able to recognize situations that may occur in health systems management that will require consultation with legal counsel. Prerequisite: BUSI 211 or BUSI 255.
  • BUSI 254. Health Economics This course applies the tools of microeconomics to the study of health care. It provides an analysis of how decisions are made by health care providers, consumers, and third parties responsible for payment (e.g. health insurers). The course is built around individual's demand for health care and the supply of services by doctors and hospitals. Topics covered include health insurance, managed care and industry competitions, the pharmaceutical industry, the role of the government as a provider of care, long-term care, international health comparisons, and cost-benefit analysis/cost-effectiveness analysis. Prerequisite: BUSI 211 or concurrent with BUSI 255.
  • BUSI 293. Health Services Management A survey of the theory and practice of healthcare management in the United States.  The course surveys management theory, operations, leadership, quality, organization, planning and human resource management.  It is designed to prepare future managers for decision making that will promote more efficient health services in a complex institutional environment.
  • BUSI 293. Healthcare Information Systems In the 21st century, information technology has emerged as a critical component within health care organizations. The advances in technology and the need for health care reform have increased the importance for health care professionals to understand and integrate information technology in their organizations. This graduate level course provides both technical and managerial perspectives on the effective use of data and information technology to improve personal and organizational performance in the health care industry.
