CIERRA WILLIAMS

"I want children to enjoy coming to school, learn and satisfy their curiosity. Children have an innate passion to learn and I want to be the one to help them flourish it."

Program: Multiple Subject + SPED                                Hometown: Oakley, Ca

What drew you most to the Benerd School of Education?
I initially wanted to attend a university that was relatively close to home so I could stay there and save some money. I live in Oakley, which is about an hour away so I can commute. When I narrowed down my choices, I ultimately loved the School of Education at Pacific because of the ability to earn a degree and credential simultaneously. I was saving a year's worth time by obtaining both of these in just four years. In fact, the school is so accelerated that I am also able to earn a multiple subject and SPED [credential]. I love all that I can learn in just four years to be out and ready to teach.

What lead you to the field of education?
My brother has a learning disability and after years of watching him struggle, and my personal interest in helping children, I knew I wanted to teach. I wanted to ensure no child felt the way my brother did, and create a space where everyone is excited to learn. I want children to enjoy coming to school, learn and satisfy their curiosity. Children have an innate passion to learn and I want to be the one to help them flourish it.

Describe your most rewarding experience so far here at Benerd.
One of the most rewarding experiences in Benerd was being able to coordinate and attend the Math Steeplechase where we had over 900 elementary fifth graders came to compete in a math competition. It was rewarding to see the amount of students that were engaged and focused in completing math. This is one of the only opportunities for students to actually earn trophies for academics! It was good experience to plan a big event, work closely with my faculty advisor and see the children love to come to learn!

How would you describe your relationship with your professors?
One of the best aspects of this program is our close relationships with professors. I feel comfortable and able to go to any one of my professors to discuss academia and/or my personal life. My professors genuinely care about my work in college as well as my well-being. Their investment in my life has made a positive learning environment and made me feel respected and cared for. My relationship is great and I appreciate the atmosphere they provide for their students.

As a student, what do you feel is unique about your program?
As I mentioned, this program allows me to accomplish all of my goals of my dream. I want to teach and this program enables me to earn my degree as well as two credentials. I love how close our program is; we have small class sizes, and great relationships with our professors. I can easily walk into the professors's or Dean's office and it is very normal, we feel comfortable discussing anything (academic or personal). I enjoy the atmosphere our program has.
