Book Buddies Reading Mentor Program for Children

University of the Pacific's Book Buddies Program, a reading mentor program for local children, takes place weekly throughout the Spring semester. The program teams students in Pacific's Gladys L. Benerd School of Education with local children in kindergarten through third grade. The program is designed to help children develop an interest in reading and build critical reading skills.

The "Book Buddies" will begin meeting on Mondays during the Spring semester beginning Monday, January 28th from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the "Book Buddies Corner," a designated area in the lobby of the Benerd School of Education. During the weekly sessions, the mentors and children also engage in literacy-based activities to develop reading comprehension skills. Some of the activities include:

• drawing favorite pictures of the stories
• using graphic organizers to summarize stories
• making flash cards on vocabulary words
• playing reading comprehension board and word games
• using hand and finger puppets to retell stories
• writing creative stories

Book Buddies was established in 1994 by the San Joaquin County Public Library in Stockton as a response to the literacy needs of children in Stockton. In 1998, the Gladys L. Benerd School of Education began sponsoring the program. Since Fall 2006, the Book Buddies Program has been endowed by Kristy and Steve Goulart, with a mission to expand our outreach effort to serve more children in our community.
