Professor Hamernik joined the Civil Engineering faculty in 1962 with his primary responsibility being to teach the structural analysis and design classes.  He was appointed Chairman of the Civil Engineering Department in 1972, later served as Associate Dean, and was Interim Dean for the 1990 academic year.  He retired from faculty in 1998.

During his tenure at the University he consulted with local engineering firms and was on the Board of Directors for a local structural engineering firm.  After retirement, Professor Hamernik taught classes for several years and still participates in school activities.  He is also undertaking a second career in watercolor painting.
