Department of Physiology and Pharmacology
Physiology & Pharmacology provides broad training for students in preparation for a career in both academia and industry. For students interested in an academic career in higher education, opportunities exist to gain experience in teaching and administering a variety of laboratory and lecture courses. Students may also gain experience in an industrial setting through cooperative work projects or internships with biotechnology or pharmaceutical companies.
Our program allows faculty and students to develop close working relationships throughout the student's training and provides a high degree of flexibility in designing individual courses of study and research projects. Physiology & Pharmacology maintains several specialized laboratories for performing specific types of studies, such as:
- cell culture, biochemistry and molecular biology
- transmission electron microscopy
- radiotracer and electrophysiological studies
The department is also home to a recently remodeled and fully accredited animal facility with an adjacent sterile surgical suite and its associated equipment. Individual departmental faculty also maintains research laboratories specific to their own research projects, many of which contain highly specialized, state-of-the-art equipment. Additional resources and specific equipment exist in other University departments located within and outside the School of Pharmacy & Health Sciences.
