Maintaining F-1 Status

Students entering the United States using an I-20 form should be admitted in F-1 status. They must follow specific Department of Homeland Security (DHS) regulations that pertain to the F-1 category. It is your responsibility to maintain your F-1 status, and not the school's or the Designated School Official's responsibility.

When you arrive in the United States, you should confirm with the DHS border inspector that your documents have been properly processed.

The inspector should:

    • Return your I-20 Form to you with a red stamp in the upper right hand corner.
    • Also stamp and write "F-1" and "D/S (Duration of Status)" on your I-94 card and return it to you.

These forms indicate the type of status, the length of time you are authorized to stay in the U.S., and the school you are authorized to attend. Keep these documents with your passport in a safe place during your stay in the U.S.
