“I was inspired to choose computer science as my major, because my mother is a programmer and she always looks happy when she works on the computer, even when working on a difficult project.” – Alicia Wong, Team Venus ’13
In her words:
I am currently a sophomore with the major of computer science. I originally decided to attend University of the Pacific because of the blended bachelor/master program in the School of Engineering and Computer Science and the campus atmosphere appealed to me more than at other universities and colleges.
I had intended to try out the computer science major just on the basis that I liked computers in general, with almost no prior knowledge of coding. But when I took one of my first classes when I was a freshman, I loved it instantly. I was inspired to choose computer science as my major, because my mother is a programmer and she always looks happy when she works on the computer, even when working on a difficult project.
If I had attended a different university, I am unsure whether I would have such a wonderful experience as I have now. I certainly feel the difficulty of material in my courses, but as I clear hurdles and obstacles, my passion and enthusiasm for computer science continues to grow.
I have no clear direction I want to go in, in terms of what area of expertise to contribute my skills and intelligence to, but this competition will hopefully give me a clue to discover my true interests for the near future. I believe that as a Team Venus member, this competition is important because it brings many companies and organizations together in one place. I feel that it gives me a chance to see what is out there in the world and what fields are intertwined with computer science. Currently, I am interested in graphics, games, and music, and I am delighted to find out what strikes my interest at the competition floor.
