The Brubeck Institute's 2014 Brubeck Festival, happening in Stockton Thursday through Saturday, March 27-29, truly has something for everyone. Concerts each evening feature GRAMMY-winning performers Al Jarreau, Eddie Palmieri and Terri Lyne Carrington. Jarreau, Palmieri and Carrington showcase some of the varied styles within jazz, from Jarreau's distinctive vocals to Palmieri's driving salsa and Latin beat to Carrington's contemporary jazz.
Families can enjoy the Jazz on the Green event under the trees on Knoles lawn on Saturday. Back by popular demand, this free event features an Instrument Petting Zoo, where young people can explore their musicality and learn about various musical instruments. Craft stations, food and entertainment showcasing regional middle, high school and college jazz performers and talents, add to the festivities.
Also on Saturday, a free symposium explores "The Role of Jazz and the Arts in Education and Culture" with Robert "Doc" Morgan, Helen Sung, Chris Walker and Simon Rowe, all alumni of the acclaimed High School for Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, Texas, as well as Al Jarreau and Terri Lyne Carrington.
And for the night owls, each evening features jam sessions and concerts beginning at 10 p.m. at the Take Five Jazz at the Brew jazz club at Valley Brew Restaurant on Stockton's Miracle Mile, featuring the BIJQ, the Pacific Jazz Ensemble, the Simon Rowe Latin Project and more.
Themed "Brubeck Festival: Coast to Coast," the festival transits the continent to New York City April 7-13 for a Brubeck tribute at Jazz at Lincoln Center. That NYC celebration will include a six-month exhibit, "Dave Brubeck: Jazz Ambassador," performances of new arrangements of Brubeck's music by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, and performances by Brubeck's sons, and current and past Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet members.
