Outreach

"Once when asked how I would like to be remembered, I answered, 'As someone who opened doors.'" — Dave Brubeck

Dave Brubeck's musical innovation and commitment to social justice opened doors for artists, educators, and audiences around the world. It is with that legacy in mind that the Brubeck Institute engages in extensive outreach every year with performances, educational presentations, and touring displays from the Brubeck Collection presented by the Institute and in partnership with schools, museums, libraries, and other cultural institutions throughout the world.

The Brubeck Outreach Program is designed to encourage the performance, study and understanding of jazz in its many forms, explore contemporary concert music, enlighten and broaden the general knowledge and appreciation of music, and promote the understanding of the work and influence of Dave Brubeck.  Take a look at some of the programs that we use to reach out and connect with our community.

Jazz And Diplomacy - From Poland to South Africa, Dave Brubeck used the power of jazz to advance the interests and values of the United States abroad. The Brubeck Fellows follow in Dave's footsteps, performing around the world as cultural ambassadors. Take a look at one of their recent journeys >>

The Brubeck Festival - Each year, The Brubeck Festival explores the music and ideas of Dave Brubeck at the Institute's home in California. In recent years, the Festival has expanded to include additional sessions in Washington D.C. and New York City. Academic symposiums are held throughout the Festival to promote the understanding of the breadth and depth of Dave's work and influence. Summer Jazz Colony - An intensive week of study and performance for a limited number of high school students, the Summer Jazz Colony also explores the music and ideas of Dave Brubeck and motivates participating artists to achieve ever higher levels of performance. Open concerts are held for the community throughout the Colony's session.
