The University of the Pacific is an institution that is committed to offering an educational and social environment that is inclusive and supportive of all students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Indeed, these beliefs are reflected in the University’s strategic directions, commitments, and values known as Pacific Rising. Included in these beliefs is the commitment to cultivate diversity, intercultural competence and global responsibility by ensuring student competencies, making diversity an integral part of curricula and student life, and creating a more diverse student body (Pacific Rising, April 27, 2007, p. 5-6).
Pacific's goal in sponsoring a conference for LGBTQIA students, faculty and staff is to demonstrate our commitment to supporting, learning and working together as a community on issues of diversity and inclusion. This conference offers us all the opportunity to exercise leadership in these areas. Ultimately, we want to serve as a "bridge" by connecting faculty, staff and students, especially, from institutions throughout the state - so that we can support, learn and grow together in our understanding of LGBTQIA issues.
As a result of participating in this conference, students will:
- Engage thoughtfully and meaningfully in educational sessions designed to enhance their interpersonal and social development.
- Network in ways that cultivate friendships and relationships with other students, staff and faculty.
- Strengthen their identity and have pride for being members of the LGBTQIA community.
- Learn about opportunities for involvement and social activism in order to become active leaders on their campuses and in their communities.
