Patricia Shafer `82
Patricia Shafer is co-founder of Mothering Across Continents, an organization that serves as a catalyst for "empowering women to provide care and compassion to orphans and vulnerable children in Africa." After graduation, Shafer went from working for two global Fortune 500 companies to establishing this visionary initiative, which provides nutritious meals for several high schools, and supports innovative school and play therapy center initiatives for at-risk children in South Africa.
Sakena Yacoobi `77
Sakena Yacoobi is founder and executive director of the Afghan Institute of Learning, internationally recognized for improving the health and education of Afghan women and children. The Institute touches the lives of hundreds of thousands of Afghan women and children, providing health education, clinical services and teacher-training since 1995. Among many awards, she and the AIL have received the 2004 Women's Rights Prize from the Peter Gruber Foundation and, in March 2009, the Henry R. Kravis Prize in Leadership from Claremont McKenna College and the Kravis Leadership Institute.
