Fraternal Organization Recognition Policy
Single sex inter/national fraternal organizations must receive a written invitation from the Vice President of Student Life in order to become a registered student organization.
Single Sex Fraternal Organization
Single sex Greek letter organizations must be a member of either the College Panhel-lenic Council, Interfraternity Council or the Multicultural Greek Council.
Pharmacy Fraternal Organization Policy
Pharmacy Greek letter organizations must be members of the Professional Fraternity Council.
Fraternal Organization Deferred Recruitment Policy
Membership in campus fraternal organizations is by invitation, after the successful completion of 12 or more semester unit of college work. In order to join a social or professional fraternity or sorority, a student must be registered for a full-time course load of study. The Panhellenic and Interfraternity Councils require all students to have a 2.50 cumulative minimum to join a fraternity or sorority. Some fraternities and sororities set higher minimum academic standards in order to join. Specific policies of professional schools may stipulate that in order to join a student must maintain a 2.00 G.P.A. or higher minimum in the required courses of the major program.
Fraternal Organization Live-in Policy
Sophomores and above are eligible to reside as active members in social fraternity and sorority houses beginning the following semester or term after joining. They must appear on the organization roster as recorded in the Student Leadership & Involvement Office the spring or fall semester prior to living in the house. Students may not terminate their University Housing contract by requesting to move from a university operated housing facility to a private Greek House.
Fraternal Organization Loss of Recognition Policy
A fraternal organization may lose its recognition as a registered student organization by the university or national office through continued violations of university and/or fraternity policies. The request to cease and desist may originate from the university, the national organization, or both.
Fraternal organizations that have lost university and/or national recognition may not engage in any university event or activity. This includes but is not limited to use of the university name, funds, resources; use of the organization’s symbols, name, nickname, ritual, mascot, organization letters; or recruitment activities.
Registered campus organizations are not permitted to co-host or co-sponsor any type of event with an unrecognized organization.
Fraternal Organization Responsibility at Events
If a group stays at another fraternity/sorority event for 15 minutes or longer where any university policy is violated, all parties present will be held responsible for the same violation.
Fraternal Organization Risk Management Policies
In addition to university policies, fraternal organizations adhere to Fraternal Insurance Purchasing Group (FIPG) Risk Management Policies that include the following:
- The possession, sale, use or consumption of alcoholic beverages, while on chapter premises or during a fraternal event, in any situation sponsored or endorsed by the chapter, or in any event an observer would associate with a fraternal organization, must be in compliance with any and all applicable laws of the state, province, county, city, and institution of higher education.
- No alcoholic beverages may be purchased through chapter funds nor may the purchase of same for members or guests be undertaken or coordinated by any member in the name of, or on behalf of, the chapter.
- Open parties, meaning those with unrestricted access by non-members of the fraternity, without specific invitation, where alcohol is present, shall be forbidden.
- No chapter may co-sponsor an event with an alcohol distributor, charitable organization or tavern (tavern defined as an establish-ment generating more than half of annual gross sales from alco-hol) where alcohol is given away, sold or otherwise provided.
- No chapter may co-sponsor or co-finance a function where alcohol is purchased by any of the host chapters, groups, or organizations.
- All recruitment activities associated with any chapter will be a DRY recruitment function.g) No member shall permit, tolerate, encourage or participate in "drinking games."
- No alcohol shall be present at any pledge/new member/novice program, activity, or ritual of the chapter.
- All chapter houses should meet all local fire and health codes and standards.
- All chapters should have posted by common phones emergency numbers for fire, police, and ambulance and should have posted evacuation routes on the backdoor of each sleeping room.
- All chapters should comply with engineering recommendations as reported by the insurance company
Fraternal Organization Violations of Policies
Fraternal organizations involved in alleged violations of University or specific fraternal policies will be subject to adjudication through a University hearing as outlined in the Judicial Procedure section of this document. The Greek Judicial Review Board will be the adjudicating body. The Greek Judicial Review Board will consist of three students, at least two of which will be members of Greek Council, one faculty and one administrator.
