Frequently Asked Questions About Individual Tutoring (FAQ)

Here's more information about our Individual Tutoring Program.  Click on each question for all details.  If your question is not answered here or you need further information, please contact us.

  • How much does tutoring cost?

The Center for Community Involvement charges $18 per hour for services provided by this program. Fee reduction opportunities may be granted to those who qualify based on the availability of scholarship funds.

All fees must be paid before beginning each tutoring session or they can be paid in advance for several sessions (a record is kept at the center).

  • Who can receive tutoring?

Almost anyone! We tutor ages 6 and up on almost any topic that we have a qualified tutor for. Subjects range from basic reading, math and writing skills to foreign languages, including higher math and science courses. We work with adult learners on GED help, test preparation, and just about anything else you can think of. If you have a specific request or special need, please give us a call and we will do our best to help!

If you are a college student attending another institution, we can help. We encourage you to check with your own school's counseling offices to see if there is a lower cost or free resource first.

Pacific students can obtain tutoring through the Educational Resource Center (ERC) in the McCaffrey Center on the first floor.

  • What hours does tutoring take place?

Tutoring takes place during the University of the Pacific's school year, and we are closed for major holidays and breaks.  Tutoring for the 2013-2014 school year ends on Wednesday, April 30th, 2014.  It will begin again in early September, 2014.

  • How often can we meet?

Tutoring can take place as often as you wish; taking your study needs and budget into full consideration. We recommend that tutoring take place once a week for younger students, and you can schedule more frequently older students with complex subjects. Tutoring sessions are a minimum of one hour in length, and up to two hours long. We encourage you to discuss your needs with your tutor to see what works best for you.

  • Can I start right away?

Once we have received your completed Tutor Request Form and most recent report card, we select from our available Pacific student tutors to find a match.  Several factors go into this matching process, including subject matter and availability. This process can take as long as 10 business days during peak times. As soon as your match is made, our Center Managers will call you and let you know the name of your tutor. Your tutor will also call to introduce themselves and set up a convenient time for your first meeting and get started!

  • How do I begin?

You can start by completing a Tutor Request Form. The form gives us information about the student who will receive tutoring, including subjects they need help in, and times they are available to receive tutoring. Printed copies are available at our offices during business hours, or on our front porch for after hours pickup.  Please give us a call at 209.946.2444 if you would like a form emailed to you.  We do not send forms out via US Postal Service.

Completed forms can be dropped in our mail slot, emailed, or returned to the front desk. You must include a copy of the student's most recent report card or progress report. Once we receive the form, we start our matching process.

  • Who will be tutoring my student?

All CCI tutors are college students from the University of the Pacific. While they are not credentialed teachers, they are very knowledgeable in their subject areas, and have been carefully screened and trained. If your student needs tutoring in multiple subjects, you may be matched with more than one tutor
