Message from the Director

Welcome to all the supporters of the Brubeck Institute and to my new colleagues, friends and future collaborators at the University of the Pacific and in our larger community. I am delighted to be appointed as the new Director of The Brubeck Institute.

As a culture, our commitment to the highest standards of artistic excellence within traditional institutional settings has been unwavering for many decades. However, as we face economic uncertainty in public and private sectors and funding for traditional arts schooling at all levels is being cut, new paradigms for quality arts education and cultural enrichment must be fashioned.

The Brubeck Institute embraces these challenges. Our future is anchored by a mission to create interdisciplinary programs of excellence that build on the legacy of Dave Brubeck's commitment to "music, creativity and education and the advancement of important social issues including civil rights, environmental concerns, international relations and social justice." With my leadership experience coordinating programs at the university level and as an advocate for jazz music in different facets of the music industry I plan to energize this mission.

I look forward to the opportunity to build upon the core programs at the Brubeck Institute, and am most grateful for the wonderful efforts of past directors, staff, supporters and friends who have helped the Institute to grow and evolve through its first decade. I also keenly anticipate the opportunity to forge new friendships and alliances in order to build stronger community regionally and nationally through engagement with the arts.

In a world that increasingly marginalizes the power of imagination within the creative disciplines, I believe that our work to champion The Brubeck Institute as an international leader in music performance, research and cultural advocacy is vital.

I look forward to meeting you at one of our concerts or public events and would like to invite you to  visit us often here at www.BrubeckInstitute.org.

Sincerely,

Simon Rowe
