The 2009-2010 Brubeck Fellows

Chad Lefkowitz-Brown Saxophonist Chad Lefkowitz-Brown is a 2008  graduate of    Horseheads High School in Horseheads, New York, and is  in  his second year as a Brubeck Fellow.  He was in the 2008 Gibson/Baldwin GRAMMY Jazz Ensemble, has won ten DownBeat awards in the categories of best blues/pop/rock  soloist, best jazz instrumental soloist, and in the best small  combo area, and was a member of the 2009 Brubeck Institute  Jazz Quintet that won the DownBeat award for best jazz group in the country.  Chad has studied with Curtis Fuller, Jeff Ballard, Taylor Eigsti, Yosvany Terry, Geoff Keezer, John LaBarbara, and Todd Coleman, and has performed with McCoy Tyner, Dave Brubeck, Christian McBride, Bobby Watson, Taylor Eigsti, Terri Lynn Carrington, Antonio Hart, Erick Marienthal, Marvin Stamm, Josh Groban, Steve Brown, Phil Flanigan, and many others.  

Nick FrenayTrumpeter Nick Frenay is from Syracuse, NY and is a 2009 graduate of Manlius Pebble Hill High School.  He was a member of the GRAMMY Jazz Ensembles (07, 08, 09), Next Generation Jazz Orchestra (07,08), and Jazz Band of America.  He has won DownBeat awards for outstanding high school soloist, and was a member of the duo with Noah Kellman that won the 2009 award for best high school jazz group in the country.  Nick has studied with John LaBarbera, Bobby Shew, Tiger Okoshi, Terell Stafford, and Jeff Stockham.  He has played at the Syracuse Jazz Fest, Vail Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, and North Sea Jazz Festival.  He has performed with Herbie Hancock, Cassandra Wilson, Bob Mintzer, McCoy Tyner, Phil Woods, James Moody, Terence Blanchard, Christian McBride, and many others. 

Noah Kellman

 Pianist Noah Kellman is from Fayetteville, NY and is a 2009 graduate of Manlius Pebble Hill High School.  He was a member of the GRAMMY Jazz Ensembles in 2009, has performed at the Vail Jazz Festival, Syracuse Jazz Fest, in the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, and many other places.  His awards include the Betty Carter Jazz Residency, ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award, National Honor Society, and eight DownBeat awards for outstanding performance as jazz soloist, original composition, and was a member of the duo with Nick Frenay that won the 2009 award for best high school jazz group in the country.  Noah has studied or performed with artists such as John Clayton, Lewis Nash, Terri Lynn Carrington, Rick Dimuzio, Bobby Watson, Geoff Keezer, Curtis Fuller, Randy Brecker, Jane Monheit, Marvin Stamm, Frank Morgan, and Danilo Perez.   

BZachary Brownassist Zach Brown is a 2008 graduate of Wilde Lake High School in Columbia,     Maryland, and is in his second year as a Brubeck Fellow.  He was a member of the 2009 Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet that won the DownBeat award for best jazz group in the country.  He has also received DownBeat Magazine awards for outstanding studio recording and outstanding live recording, been a finalist for the Gibson/Baldwin GRAMMY Band, and has performed at the Duke Ellington Jazz Festival, Artscape Festival, and with noted jazz artists such as Paquito D'Rivera, Terell Stafford, Dave Brubeck, Dave Valentin, Marvin Stamm, and many others.  He has studied bass with Herman Burney and Pepe Gonzalez, percussion with Robert Miller, cello with Benjamin Myers, and with Taylor Eigsti, Jeff Ballard, Ray Drummond, Yosvany Terry, and Geoff Keezer.  

Corey Fonville

Drummer Corey Fonville is a 2008 graduate of Ocean Lakes    High School in Virginia Beach, VA and has attended New School University in NY.  He was a member of the GRAMMY Jazz Ensembles in 2005, 2007, and 2008, and has played with numerous groups, including Birdland Express.  He has played in festivals and venues such as the Knitting Factory, The Vic, and The Henry Fonda Theater in LA, Chandler Recital Hall in VA, Festival de Jazz in Lapataia, Uruguay, Telluride Jazz Festival in CO, and others.  Corey has performed with artists such as Joe Locke, Jeremy Pelt, Richie Cole, Hod O'Brian, and Cyrus Chestnut.  He is in his first year with the BIJQ.
