2003 Summer Jazz Colony participants

Kyle Athayde Kyle is a trumpet and vibraphone player who has just completed his freshman year at Acalanes High School in Lafayette , California , where he plays trumpet in the Wind Ensemble and vibes and drums in the Jazz Band. He was a member of the Latin Jazz Youth Ensemble of San Francisco and the Generations in Jazz Contra Costa County Honor Band. In 2002 and 2003 he received DownBeat Student Awards for Outstanding Soloist on both vibes and trumpet and he has appeared with jazz great such as Wynton Marsalis, Steve Turre, Poncho Sanchez, and Claire Fischer.

Pat Carroll Pat is a saxophonist and is a student at Foothill High School in Pleasanton , California . He was a member of the 2003 California IAJE All-State Honor Jazz Band, SFJazz All-Star High School Ensemble, and the Monterey Jazz Festival All-Star High School Big Band. He is the recipient of the Berklee/Monterey Jimmy Lyons Scholarship and was recognized for Outstanding Performance in DownBeat Magazine's 2003 Student Music Awards.

Rashaan Carter Rashaan is a bassist and attends Suitland High School for the Performing Arts in Suitland , Maryland . He began on saxophone and tuba, and began studying bass just three years ago and has already become a member of the Washington D.C. jazz community, performing in venues such as Blues Alley, Twins, HR-57, and the Bohemian Caverns. He has appeared with jazz greats including Gary Thomas, Roy Hargrove, and Stefon Harris. Rashaan also plays classical bass and is a member of both Prince George 's County Honors and Maryland All-State Orchestras. He studies with Michael Bowie and Ephriam Wolfolk.

Eldar Djangirov Eldar is a pianist and is a native of Russia . He began taking piano lessons at age five in Kyrgyzstan . In 1998, he attended the Interlochen Arts Academy Summer Camp and later received recognition when he performed with Marian McPartland at the Eastman School of Music and on her National Public Radio show “Piano Jazz”. Eldar has performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., been featured on “CBS Sunday Morning” with Billy Taylor, and the 42 nd Annual Grammy Awards Show, and he won first prize in both the 2001 Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival and 2002 Peter Nero Piano Competitions. He just finished his sophomore year in high school at the Barstow School in Kansas City , and has moved to San Diego where he will begin his junior year at the Francis Parker School .

Tom Gardner Tom is a saxophonist who began studying piano, drums, and guitar at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto . Currently a resident of Washington , DC where he attends the Field School , Tom switched to sax at age 12 and by 15 was the youngest member of “Betty Carter's Jazz Ahead 2002”, the Kennedy Center 's residency program for aspiring jazz composer/performers. He received an honorable mention in the ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Competition, place second at the East Coast Jazz Festival's Fish Middleton Jazz Scholarship Competition, has attended the Aspen Snowmass Academy and the Stanford Jazz Workshop, and was featured at Washington , DC 's “Art Beat”. He has appeared with jazz artists such as Antonio Hart and Tim Warfield.

Hayden Hawkins Hayden is a drummer who attends the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston , Texas , where he is a member of the top big band and combo. He is also a member of the Young Sounds of Houston Jazz Orchestra. He has played drums since age seven and has studied jazz since age 13. Hayden was recently awarded “Outstanding Musician/Soloist” at this year's American Festival for the Arts. He has performed at the Texas Jazz Festival in Corpus Christi , the Kemah Jazz Festival, and the North Texas Jazz Festival.

Dustin Kaufman Dustin is a drummer and is the youngest member of the jazz combo at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston , Texas . In the past year, Dustin appeared with jazz artists such as Gonzalo Rubelcaba, Jason Moran, Art Landy, and Charles McPherson. He has received several awards and citations for excellent musicianship, and recently attended the Brubeck Institute Jazz Camp where he was presented the Most Outstanding Musician Award.

Corey King Corey is a trombonist who attends the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston , Texas , where he performs with both the big band and top combo as well as in the classical music ensembles. He has studied trombone for six years and holds the solo chair in the Houston-based Dennis Dotson Big Band. He has performed at the Kemah, Corpus Christi , and Addison Jazz Festivals, and won the Outstanding Musicianship Award at the latter. Corey also attended the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshop where he studied with John Fedchock.

Pascal Le Boeuf Pascal is a pianist who began performing at age 12 and composing at age 13. He is a student at Pacific Collegiate Charter School in Santa Cruz , California , and has received the 2003 ASCAP-IAJE Commission for Emerging Composers as well as Honorable Mention in the 2002 ASCAP Young Composers Competition. He also received the 2003 DownBeat Student Award for Best Extended Composition, Best Song, and Outstanding Combo Performance. Other performance awards include first place at the San Jose Jazz Festival Youth Piano Competition, Smith Dobson/Don Hass Award, Santa Cruz Jazz Festival Smith Dobson Piano Scholarship, and the Cal-Poly Jazz and Wind Festival Soloist Award.

Matt Marantz Matt is a saxophonist at the Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas, Texas, where he as appeared with such jazz artists as Jamey Aebersold, Dan Haerle, Roy Hargrove, and Red Holloway. This past June he was featured as the cover story on DownBeat Magazine's annual Student Award pull-out section because he received the DownBeat Student Award for Best Jazz Soloist for an unprecedented fourth year in a row, and was the first student ever to garner this prestigious award in six different categories in a single year. Matt was also named Best Instrumental Jazz Soloist at the 2001 and 2002 Monterey Jazz Festival High School Competitions and was member of the 2003 National GRAMMY High School Jazz Ensemble and Monterey Jazz Festival All-Star Big Band.

Perry Morris Perry is a student at the Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas, Texas, where he performs with the top combo, which took first place at the Monterey Jazz Festival High School Competition, and he also plays in the BTWHSPVA Jazz Duo and Funk/Rock Group, both of which won last year's DownBeat Student Awards in their respective categories. He has performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival and the IAJE Annual Conference in Long Beach , California . This is his second year at the Summer Jazz Colony.

Michael Palma Michael is a pianist and has been studying since age five. He attends Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas , Texas where he is a member of the top combo. He performed at the 2001 Monterey Jazz Festival, the 2002 Monterey Jazz Festival High School Competition, and the 2002 IAJE Conference in Long Beach . Michael is also a member of the Monterey Jazz Festival High School Big Band, the Marchel Ivery Quartet in Dallas , and a hip-hop collective ensemble. He has opened for Joshua Redman and has appeared with jazz artists such as Paquito d'Rivera, Christian McBride, and Roy Hargrove.

Anja Parks Anja is a trumpet player who attends the LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and Performing Arts in New York . Since middle school, she has garnered awards for outstanding musicianship at festivals and competitions such as the Reno Jazz Festival, Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival High School Competition, DownBeat Student Awards, and the U.S. Army Band Young Artist Competition. She was selected three times for the National GRAMMY High School Jazz Ensemble, twice for the Monterey Jazz Festival High School All-Star Big Band, and twice for the Brubeck Institute Summer Jazz Colony. Anja has performed at Carnegie Hall with the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, sat in at the Blue Note with the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Star Big Band, and appeared at Birdland with the Jon Faddis Quintet.

Joe Sanders Joe is a bassist and has just graduated from the Milwaukee High School of the Arts. There he performed twice at the JVC Jazz Festival in New York as well as the Vienna , North Sea, Montreaux, and Vienne festivals in Europe . He was a member of the 2002 National GRAMMY High School Jazz Ensemble. He has been selected to participate in the Brubeck Institute Fellowship Program and has performed at the Monterey and Playboy Jazz Festival, studied with Christian McBride and Jeff Chambers, and performed with Dave Brubeck.

Jennifer Sanon Jennifer is a vocalist who attends the New World School of the Arts in Miami , Florida , where she performs with the big band and top combo. She has sung in church since she was very young and has studied jazz for only two years, but has already won the 2003 DownBeat Student Award for Best Jazz Vocalist, and the Outstanding Vocalist Award at Lincoln Center 's 2003 Essentially Ellington Competition in New York . She was also one of six students selected to comprise the 2003 National GRAMMY High School Vocal Jazz Ensemble.

Dominic Thiroux Dominic is a bassist and vocalist who attends Hamilton High School Academy of Music in Los Angeles where he plays bass in Jazz Ensemble “A” and is the tenor soloist in the Vocal Jazz Ensemble, winner of the 2003 DownBeat Student Award for Best vocal Jazz Choir. This is his second year in the Summer Jazz Colony, as well as the Monterey Jazz Festival High School All-Star Big Band. In 2003, Dominic received the prestigious L.A. Music Center Spotlight Award, was named the Outstanding Soloist at the Monterey Jazz Festival High School Competition for bass and vocals, was selected to the California Music Educators Association/IAJE All-State Honor Jazz Band, and performed in New York with the 2003 National GRAMMY High School Vocal Jazz Ensemble.

• Max Townsley Max is a guitarist who attends Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas , Texas , where he performs and records with the top combo. He was introduced to the guitar at age 10 by his father. He performed at the 2002 IAJE Annual Conference in Long Beach and at the 2002 Monterey Jazz Festival High School Competition, where he received the Best Rhythm Section Player Award. Max has appeared with jazz greats such as Roy Hargrove and Keith Anderson.
