Memo to the Campus Community Sent July 21, 2008

July 21, 2008

To: Members of the University of the Pacific Community

From: Elizabeth Griego, Ph.D., Vice President for Student Life

The recent media coverage of a student sexual assault at Pacific reminds us to consider the problem of sexual assault on university campuses. I would like to take this opportunity to communicate Pacific's definitions and policies on sexual assault, as well as to highlight the many resources that are available to students, faculty and staff to prevent these incidents and deal with them when they happen.

The University has a strong and clear policy on sexual assault and all forms of violence, intolerance and harassment. These definitions and policies are posted on the University website as part of the Tiger Lore student handbook. Tiger Lore also lists many resources available to help protect students and assist victims, including:

Student Victim Advocate

209.403.0250 (available 24/7)

Public Safety

Emergency: 209.946.3911

Non-emergency: 209.946.2537

Health Services

209.946.2315

Women's Center of San Joaquin County

In addition to these on-demand resources, Student Life offers proactive education and prevention programs by trained staff such as Residential Area Coordinators, Graduate Residence Directors and Residential Advisors; the Victim Advocate and Counseling Center staff; the University Multi-Faith Chaplain; the Assistant Dean of Students and Dean of Students; and many others. Incoming students receive awareness and prevention training in New Student Orientation programs. The Office of Judicial Affairs provides numerous resources regarding the responsible use of alcohol, information about drugs commonly used in sexual assault and the judicial hearing process for complaints of sexual harassment and assault.

Finally, the Multicultural Affairs staff is working with students to develop the Women's Center, located in the ground level of the McCaffrey Center, and to implement sexual assault prevention and other informative programs. Staff welcomes your interest and participation in expanding these efforts.
