Ted Pickell '14 continues to enjoy success since graduating from the vocal performance program at University of the Pacific in 2014.

Hailed for his "strong bass-baritone" and "tremendous" singing, Pickell's most recent success comes in the Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions. He won the district competition in October 2017 - his third district-level win since graduating from Pacific's Conservatory of Music - and twice has won third place at the regional level. He also received the Audience Choice Award in the October district competition. He will compete next on Jan. 14 in the MONC Western Region event in Los Angeles with sights on the national semifinals and national grand finals in April 2018 at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City.

For the 2017-18 opera season, Pickell made his San Diego Opera debut as Samuel in "The Pirates of Penzance," with Greer Gimsley as the Pirate King. He also returned to the Northwest Indiana Symphony in the title role in "The Mikado."

Pickell first appeared in the title role in "The Mikado" during the 2016-17 opera season. He also performed as Der Vater in "Hänsel und Gretel" with the Point Loma Opera Theatre, The Giant in "Jack and the Beanstalk" and Basilio in "The Barber of Seville" with Opera Iowa's young artist outreach ensemble. He also joined the roster of the Des Moines Metro Opera's Apprentice Stars and there study-covered the role of John Claggart in "Billy Budd" and performed the role of Nick Shadow in scenes from "The Rake's Progress."

During the 2015-16 opera season, he debuted in the roles of Blitch in "Susannah" and Sam in "Trouble in Tahiti," and reprised the role of Figaro in "Le Nozze di Figaro" with the Northwestern University Opera Theatre. He debuted in the role of Leporello in "Don Giovanni" with the Point Loma Opera Theatre. He also returned to the Music Academy of the West as a voice fellow and recently graduated with a master's in voice performance at Northwestern University.

Before graduating Pacific, he was in Pacific Opera Theatre production of "The Merry Wives of Windsor," which took first place in the National Opera Association's 2013 Opera Production Competition.
