Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) Update

Information on New User Interface and Migration of Information from Sakai Before July 1

Here are some of the upcoming Canvas events and deadlines from the CTL:

May 16: New Canvas User Interface
Canvas has released a new user interface (UI), which our campus will be switching to on May 16. Changes to look forward to include a new left-hand navigation menu on the landing page and a customizable display of courses as tiles in the middle of the page. Beyond the landing page, everything else will look the same as it does now. Watch this video to learn more.  

May 16: Migration of Media from Kaltura to Mediasite
Pacific currently hosts videos on a custom version of Kaltura integrated into Sakai (Media Gallery). After exploring several options, Canvas Task Force representatives agreed that we should discontinue our Kaltura license and move all video content to our current Canvas integration of Mediasite. The group evaluated a Kaltura integration, but determined that Mediasite was a better choice as it meets the widest range of program needs: it not only hosts videos, but also offers desktop recording and lecture capture. Additionally, Mediasite provides analytics to help identify and manage video content (unlike our integration of Kaltura).  

No video content will be lost; all files in Kaltura will be stored and accessible as we work through the migration process, and archived thereafter. We will be ending our active use of Media Gallery on May 16. We encourage faculty to take advantage of this opportunity to "spring clean," as dated content may not need to be migrated. Please use this form to submit requests to migrate video from Sakai to Canvas or contact Tara Buñag, Senior Instructional Designer, if you have any questions about the video migration process.

Course Migration to Canvas 
CTL staff continue to make progress on Phase 3 of the course migration from Sakai to Canvas. If you have not yet requested course migration, please complete this form or contact Senior Instructional Designer Dr. Tara Buñag (tbunag@pacific.edu). The CTL also continues to host its Thursday Canvas Camps. These are an opportunity for faculty members to drop in and get one-on-one assistance building course content in Canvas, and are held every Thursday 9 - 3 p.m., in the Library, Classroom 2.

Non-Academic Site Migration from Sakai 
Any project sites in Sakai that are student-facing can also be migrated to Canvas. All other non-academic project sites in Sakai should be migrated to SharePoint. Please use the following resources to get started with your migration and to access training and support:

  • Personal assistance in setting up a SharePoint site and beginning migration is available by contacting helpdesk@pacific.edu or by visiting the SharePoint Site Request form.
  • Self-guided training and support (including videos and PowerPoint) is available at the SharePoint Support Site.
  • Pacific Technology has partnered with Assessment, Training and Technology to provide SharePoint training sessions through June in the Pacific Technology offices at 1776 W. March Lane. For more information and to register for these courses, visit the Learning + Development course schedule.
