University Symphony Orchestra

The University Symphony Orchestra provides a full range of performance experiences.  In addition to the standard repertoire, the orchestra performs literature from the Baroque through the twenty-first century.  It collaborates with the Pacific Opera Theatre in fully-staged operas and musical theater, and performs major choral and orchestral works with the University choral ensembles.  The orchestra also programs concertos with faculty and guest artists, and with students in the annual Commencement Concerto Concert.

In addition to concerts,  numerous readings of many types are organized throughout the year.  Liszt's Les Preludes or a Vivaldi concerto may appear on the music stand, and then disappear just as quickly. The advanced conducting class will sometimes be on the podium, giving students the opportunity to conduct an orchestra. The orchestration class will have a chance to get its final projects heard and critiqued by the full orchestra.  Excellence, novelty, and the love of music are always on the program.

There are countless reasons to join the University Symphony Orchestra.

  • Do you enjoy the classics?  We have performed Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 and Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade.
  • Is contemporary music your great interest?  Takemitsu's astonishing viola concerto and Ligeti's magical Lontano have been on recent programs.
  • Do you enjoy working with other musicians in large settings?  We recently performed Brahms' German Requiem and Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms, as well as scenes from Wagner's sublime and immense opera, Parsifal.

If you want a tremendous musical experience while performing the world's finest symphonic music, the University Symphony Orchestra is for you.  Membership is open to any University of the Pacific student by audition at the beginning of each semester.
