Baseball Stadium
The Klein family, synonymous with baseball in Stockton, has given the
University of the Pacific $1.5 million to begin construction on a new
baseball stadium at the University to be named “Klein Family Field.”
The facility, which includes a new playing field, practice field and stands,
is expected to be ready in time for 2006 season opener in February. It
will be located at the Pershing/Alpine Avenue corner of campus, where
a multipurpose athletic playing field is currently located.
The $1.5 million gift raises approximately half of the estimated $3 million cost for the modern new facility, seen as a much-needed investment to attract top baseball talent, solidify the Tigers’ prestige within Division I, and enhance student life by making it easier for students to attend games. The Tigers previously played and practiced at Billy Hebert Field, which was shared with the Stockton Ports and created conflicts with both teams’ practice schedules. With the Ports move to a new waterfront ballpark in 2005, the City will no longer be maintaining Billy Hebert Field at Division I standards. And of course, there is also a lot to be said in college baseball for true “home field advantage.”
Pacific Tigers baseball Coach Ed Sprague said, “We are excited
and fortunate that this gracious local family, the Kleins, will put their
name on a stadium that will bring Pacific Baseball to the next level.”
Klein family patriarch Sol Klein came to Stockton in 1917 established
a 16-team grammar school league, donated uniforms and equipment to poor
children, and helped found Little League Baseball in Stockton. He was
one of the founders of and first president of the Stockton Baseball Club,
now the Stockton Ports. His son, Bud Klein, played baseball for Pacific.
