...China Trip Report

The Provost serves as the chief academic officer of the University and has overall responsibility for the institution's educational and research programs. Philip N. Gilbertson has served as Provost of the University of the Pacific since 1996.

As Provost, he serves as the University’s chief academic officer and has overall responsibility for the institution’s educational and research programs, library services, information technology, enrollment and financial aid, and continuing education. He oversees the College and Schools on three campuses, 120 academic programs, 675 faculty, 6250 students, and a $115 million budget. Administratively, those programs are divided into nine academic schools, each headed by a dean or assistant provost.

The Council of Deans reports to the Provost. It is an important agency for the deans to assist communication and collaboration across the University. The Council includes all academic deans, the associate and assistant provosts, and the Academic Budget Officer.

As chairperson of the Institutional Priorities Committee, the Provost coordinates the development of the University's strategic planning activities as well as a broad array of assessment activities that focus on achieving goals and fostering high levels of student learning. University accreditation and program review are important parts of the University's assessment program managed by the Provost.

At Pacific, the Undergraduate General Education Program is supervised by the Dean of the College. As part of the University's distinctive academic and research mission, the College and the School have created a number of centers and institutes.

Faculty governance is important at Pacific and has traditionally played a strong role. The University of the Pacific Academic Council oversees faculty governance matters and other academic issues.
