When: 9:30am- 12:00pm, February 10, 2010
Where: The Council of Government Building
555 E. Weber Avenue, Stockton

Description:While the world economy has taken a serious dip into recession, Stockton and the Central Valley have taken an even harder punch. It began with the mortgage crisis two years ago and now Stockton's housing market shows nearly 70 percent of the listed homes as foreclosures. Added to that is an almost 17-percent unemployment rate.
Pacific regularly reports on economic trends in the area, and many units provide helpful community services such as the Eberhardt School of Business's Business Forecast Center, its Center for Entrepreneurship, and the Institute for Family Business. The Office of Economic Development lends expertise and resources to help local government, business, education, and other organizations. Other units with expertise on the economy are the Office of Student Life's Career Resources Center, the School of International Studies' Global Center for Social Entrepreneurship, the Jacoby Center for Public Service and Civic Leadership, McGeorge School of Law, the Career Resource Center and the Center for Community Involvement.
The community forum on the economy and safety net will explore issues of business development, job creation, training and workforce development. Participants include the directors of the Chambers of Commerce in Stockton and Tracy as well as Hispanic and Asian-American chamber representatives. They are joined by members of the San Joaquin Partnership, The Record of Stockton, a panel of non-profit executive directors and the United Way of San Joaquin.
The business school's dean, Richard Flaherty, will co-chair the steering committee on the economy along with a community member. Other steering committee members will be announced.
Those who would like to submit ideas or questions about any of the issues being discussed during the Beyond Our Gates series can do so by sending an e-mail of 2,500 words or less to beyondourgates@pacific.edu.
