Our Shared Values

January 18, 2018

To the University of the Pacific Community:

Last year, we embarked on the Pacific Values Initiative to identify and define our core values. As we work towards becoming a unified university (one of the priorities of Pacific 2020R, our refreshed strategic plan), our values provide a common language for collaboration and shared goals that will guide us to becoming a leading university in Northern California.

The Values Initiative was led by a steering committee with representatives from faculty, staff, students, alumni and administrators who conducted surveys, focus groups, and interviews on our three campuses. Their efforts resulted in more than 1,400 responses from across the university. They also conducted a comprehensive review of previous efforts and related studies to confirm, not surprisingly, that we collectively and consistently cite the same core values that shape who we are and what we believe in. The Steering Committee’s research identified six values. They developed definitions, and the values were shared widely throughout the Pacific community and with the Board of Regents for feedback and affirmation.

I am proud to share the six core values developed by the university community:

  • Academic Excellence: We have high academic standards with a focus on teaching, scholarship, and experiential learning. We invest in individualized attention and long-term relationships that build human potential.

  • Community Engagement: We are committed to learning from and enhancing our communities. We share a sense of purpose and pride in what we accomplish together.

  • Diversity and Inclusion: We respect all individuals and embrace the richness that our diversity brings to us as an educational community. We recognize and honor differences, creativity and bridging what is distinct to create an inclusive environment.

  • Integrity and Accountability: We demonstrate integrity in our actions. We strive to always do the right thing and hold ourselves and others accountable.

  • Respect and Civility: We demonstrate authentic respect for others and a willingness to engage in genuine discourse. We seek to establish common ground and ways to connect with others. We honor and value one another.

  • Student Centered: Our students come first in everything we do. Student impact is an important consideration in every decision we make.

Our values come together under the collective themes of Character, Community and Excellence, words we heard consistently from our community. We have tied these themes with our values in this visual representation that you will start to see in the coming months:

Our values undergird what we do for students and the whole Pacific family, today and well into the future. They represent what we do best—commit to our students and each other, innovate and collaborate to drive new ideas, take responsibility for our actions, and act with integrity. Our values remind us that we are here because we share the common belief of contributing to something greater than ourselves. I can say without hesitation that living our values will be the most important work we do together. Our approach will include looking at our policies, procedures, practices and administrative structures to ensure that they support and foster our shared values.

This month we are beginning a series of conversations with groups of faculty, staff and students to identify and prioritize areas for improvement: those that are out of alignment with our values where we can make important changes to ensure that what we do reflects who we are. Your engagement and insights will be essential.

We will also ensure that how we communicate to our students, our employees and our community reflects and instills our values, through a shared vocabulary, unified identity, and vibrant storytelling. The values will become more visible throughout our campuses and in our communications in the coming months.

I am excited about this effort and the positive effect it will bring to our community. I am deeply appreciative for all that you do to make Pacific an outstanding university for our students, faculty and staff.
