COACHE Faculty Climate Survey

In Fall 2014, the University of the Pacific partnered with the Collaborative On Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE) at the Harvard Graduate School of Education to conduct a faculty climate survey in Spring 2015.  

Why did Pacific conduct this climate survey? Our faculty is at the core of the University and supporting faculty and staff development and engagement is one of the University's Institutional Priorities, as affirmed in Pacific 2020 and the Academic Plan. Pacific conducted this survey to identify areas for improvement and implement best practices to improve the workplace for our faculty. 

The survey asked full-time faculty members about their work lives and is organized into the following important areas:

  • Research, teaching, service
  • Resources in support of faculty work
  • Benefits, compensation, and work/life balance
  • Interdisciplinary work and collaboration
  • Mentoring 
  • Tenure and promotion practices 
  • Leadership and governance
  • Departmental collegiality, quality, engagement
  • Appreciation and recognition

Pacific received COACHE's Provost's Report in Fall 2015, and the Provost shared the Report in its entirety with the University. In October and November 2015, the Provost and Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs held a series of conversations across all three campuses to candidly discuss the survey results and to identify emerging priorities for Pacific to improve the quality of faculty work-life. Following the completion of the comment period, all of the unit conversations and email comments were de-identified and summarized and can be viewed (along with other documents) at the COACHE SharePoint site (PacificNet login required).

Informed by the survey results and these comments, the Provost's Office will work closely with faculty leadership to identify priorities, determine next steps and research best practices to help us move forward, together. A plan of action will be developed and communicated in early Spring 2016.
