Future Pharmacists

Explore the World of Medicine

Students will learn about pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences in this unique two-week program presented by experienced faculty and staff from Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy. In addition to experts in the field, students will learn from current students in the school's doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) and other graduate programs (PhD).

Curriculum

Future Pharmacists is designed for high school students with a passion for science and health care who want to gain knowledge and skills in preparation for college and pharmacy school. Through interactive learning and hands-on activities, each day will provide experiences that focus on different career opportunities in the field of pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences.

Planned Topics

During the two-week program, students can expect to:

  • Shadow and interact with current doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) and graduate (PhD) students
  • Learn from practicing pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists
  • Experience hands-on activities in immunization and compounding techniques
  • Acquire knowledge and skills to participate in patient care simulations
  • Learn about pharmaceutical research and clinical trial design
  • Participate in pharmacy-themed games and activities

Kate O'Dell

Co-lead Kate M. O’Dell, PharmD, BCPS earned her doctor of pharmacy from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She also completed a fellowship in pharmaceutical outcomes research at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. She is a member of the California Society of Health-System Pharmacists, the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy and the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties.

Melanie Felmlee

Co-lead Melanie A. Felmlee, PhD joined Pacific as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Medicinal Chemistry in 2015. Originally from Canada, Dr. Felmlee earned her bachelor of science in biomedical toxicology from University of Guelph and her master of science in pharmacy from University of Saskatchewan. She earned her doctor of philosophy in pharmaceutical sciences from University at Buffalo, SUNY where she also completed a postdoctoral fellowship.
