Internal Admissions Requirements for the Department of Biological Sciences

First-year students

Students are eligible to apply for admission to a major in the Department of Biological Sciences from another program in the university (including Exploratory in the College) after the end of their freshman year.  To be eligible students must meet the following criteria:

  • Completion of both BIOL 51 and BIOL 61 at Pacific, with no grade below a C. These courses must be completed prior to the end of the second summer session following the student's freshman year.
  • A freshman year cumulative Pacific GPA of 2.5 or higher, and a GPA of 2.0 or higher in courses counting towards the biology major, with at least 28 units earned at Pacific.

Students beyond their third semester

Students are eligible to apply for admission to a major in the Department of Biological Sciences from another program in the university (including Exploratory in the College).  To be eligible students must meet the following criteria:

  • At least four courses counting towards the major must be completed at Pacific prior to the internal transfer, and must include both BIOL 51 and BIOL 61.  The other two courses can be Biology electives or come from Chemistry (CHEM 25 or above), Physics (PHYS 23, 25, 53 or 55) or Mathematics (MATH 37 or above).  These courses must be completed at Pacific.
  • A cumulative Pacific GPA of 2.5 or higher, and a GPA of 2.0 or higher in courses counting towards the biology major, with at least 42 units earned at Pacific.

Transfer Students

Students who have transferred to the University of the Pacific into a major other than Biological Sciences are eligible to apply for admission to the major in the Department of Biological Sciences. To be eligible students must meet the following criteria:

  • At least four courses counting towards the major must be completed at Pacific prior to the internal transfer, and must include at least two biology courses (either BIOL 51 and BIOL 61, or other Biology electives).  The other two courses can be Biology electives or come from Chemistry (CHEM 25 or above), Physics  (PHYS 23, 25, 53 or 55)  or Mathematics (MATH 37 or above).  These courses must be completed at Pacific.
  • A cumulative Pacific GPA of 2.5 or higher, and a GPA of 2.0 or higher in courses counting towards the biology major, with at least 24 units earned at Pacific.

Completion of these requirements does not guarantee graduation with a degree in Biological Sciences.  The student must fulfill the graduation requirements within the major and maintain a minimum 2.0 in all required courses, as well as complete all University degree requirements.
