EdD in Education - Educational + School Psychology

The EdD program represents a four-to-five-year course of study, including field work for the Counseling Psychology concentration. It is designed for the student who wishes to apply developmental theory to design programs that emphasize prevention and the promotion of mental health and academic success for all learners. Applicants are accepted only at the Master's level.

The  EdD program in educational and counseling psychology at UOP is a unified and sequential program in psychology. All aspects of training -- the acquisition of scholarly knowledge, the practice and appreciation of research skills, and the development of professional competence -- are blended. The Counseling Psychology concentration may allow the student to sit for the State Board of Psychology examination for licensure as a psychologist in the State of California. Additional coursework beyond the 18 unit concentration is required to meet the licensure requirements. Students are advised to work closely with their advisor to make sure they meet the requirements to sit for the licensure exam if that is their goal.  

Students may elect to concentrate in one or more specific areas. In order to earn a concentration, students must fulfill the general requirements, as well as specific concentration requirements. Each department offers a number of concentration options.

  • Applicant must hold a Master's degree or equivalent, preferably in a closely related field.
  • For applicants whose native language or principal language of instruction is not English, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required. Scores should not be lower than 550 on the TOEFL.
  • Cumulative Undergraduate Grade Point Average (GPA) should not be lower than 3.0 overall (on a 4.0 scale). No graduate-level coursework lower than 3.0. Please see additional requirements for grades in specific courses in the EdD Handbook.
  • In a Letter of Interest, the applicant should explicitly state an interest in becoming a psychological service provider. The applicant should demonstrate the ability to express thoughts and ideas clearly.
  • An interview is required before the applicant can be considered for admission. The applicant should demonstrate the following in the interview: (a) Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to listen, adapt, and address ambiguity; (b) a willingness to examine his/her own biases and assumptions as a graduate student and future professional; (c) communicate sensitivity and skill in recognizing his/her own characteristics; and (d) recognize and deal responsibly with personal strengths and weaknesses.
