Book Buddies Reading Mentor Program for Children

History of the Program
At Benerd we believe in doing the work to enhance and guide the next generation. The Book Buddies Program is a reading mentor program that was established in 1994 by the San Joaquin County Public Library in Stockton as a response to the literacy needs of children in the surrounding community. In 1998, the Gladys L. Benerd School of Education began sponsoring the program. Since fall 2006, the Book Buddies Program has been endowed by Kristy and Steve Goulart, with a mission to expand our outreach effort to serve more children in our community.

About the Program
Children in kindergarten through third grade are paired with student mentors from the School of Education. The children and the mentors meet one-on-one each week throughout the spring semester. Benerd's mentors read and engage with the child in literacy-based activities to develop reading comprehension skills. Some of these activities include drawing, using graphic organizers, making flash cards for vocabulary, and using hand puppets to retell stories. Each semester our Book Buddies Program serves over two dozen grade school children.

Details of the Program
The sessions are held in the "Book Buddies Corner," a designated area in the lobby of our school on Mondays from 4:00pm to 5:00pm starting at the beginning of the spring semester continuing on through the fall semester. Parents can sign up when they arrive or use our sign-up sheet posted below. *Parents must remain in the building during the reading sessions.
