Description

University of the Pacific has partnered with the Abbott Fund, the foundation arm of healthcare giant Abbott Laboratories, to combat the diabetes crisis in Stockton by establishing the Abbott Fund Scholars to support aspiring health care workers in the City of Stockton.  

Students in the Master of Social Work (MSW) program who are Abbott Fund Scholars will receive a scholarship and complete a sub-specialization in Diabetes Care and Management (DCM) within the healthcare specialization of the MSW program. This sub-specialization is designed for students interested in pursuing health social work careers focused on diabetes prevention, education and management in Stockton.

Abbot Fund Scholars in the MSW program will complete a workshop series, an elective course, a capstone project, and a 30-week field placement in diabetes care and management.

Eligibility

  • Applicants are required to be either residing or working in Stockton and demonstrate intent to serve Stockton by accepting to complete the MSW internship(s) in organizations that serve the Stockton community.
  • Applicants agree to work in Stockton upon graduation for at least two years.
  • Students must be admitted to the MSW program before applying for the scholarship.

Financial Benefits

  • Qualifying students in the 16-month MSW program will receive a scholarship for up to 50 percent of tuition.
  • Qualifying students in the 12-month MSW Advanced Standing program will receive a scholarship for to 25 percent of tuition.

Service Commitment

  • Abbott Fund Scholars are expected to pursue health or health-related careers in the City of Stockton upon graduation.

Application Requirements

  • 6 short-answer questions
  • 3-page essay
  • Applications for the Abbott Fund Scholars program are reviewed on a rolling basis. Admitted students should apply as soon as possible after admission to the MSW.
