Rufaro Gwarada

Rufaro Gwarada graduated from SIS in May 2006 with a BA in Global Economic Relations and a minor in Business Administration. After graduating she interned at the United Nations Development Program in Malawi in the HIV and AIDS and Governance Units.  She authored a concept paper titled "Thinking Outside the Box: How Prison Farms Can Stem The Tide Of HIV In Malawi" which was to became the impetus for an initiative to strengthen the justice system in Malawi through an upgrade of management and conditions in prisons.  Rufaro also created a "State of Malawi's Prisons" fact sheet providing an at a glance synopsis of the Malawi prison system as a resource for the UN system. She then earned her masters degree in Gender and Development at the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex, and was  a Research Intern at the International HIV/AIDS Alliance.

She is currently the Development & Cultural Strategies Director at Mobilize the Immigrant Vote, San Francisco, CA. 

How did SIS prepare her professionally?  "I honed my critical thinking, research and writing skills at SIS. SIS also provided space to engage with fellow students and staff in lively discussions about current important issues in international development. I was also able to explore and deepen my interest in gender equality."
