Three Faculty Members Receive University’s SAAG Award

In March 2011, Katerina Vanderova, PharmD., PhD., Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, received the University's Scholarly Artistic Activity Grant (SAAG) for her proposal "Genetic Interactions of LRRK2 in Dopaminergic Neurons of a Drosophila Model of Parkinson's Disease." Her proposal will look at how dopaminergic neurons interacts with LRRK2,the most common Parkinson's Disease-causing gene, in hopes to gain a better understanding on the cellular processes to help design more effective treatments.

"I very much value that the University and School recognize the importance of basic research. Strong research program will increase visibility and competitiveness of our School and University and provide more opportunities for hands-on research experience for our students," said Dr. Vanderova.

In addition to Dr. Vanderova, Jim Uchizono, PharmD., PhD., Assistant Dean and Director, PreHealth Programs and Associate Professor, Department of Pharmaceutics and Medicinal Chemistry, and Jesika Faridi, PhD., Assistant Professor, Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, also received SAAG awards.
