Department of Physiology and Pharmacology

The Department of Physiology and Pharmacology provides broad training for students in preparation for a career in both academia and industry. For students interested in an academic career in higher education, opportunities exist to gain experience in teaching and administering a variety of laboratory and lecture courses. Students may also gain experience in an industrial setting through cooperative work projects or internships with biotechnology or pharmaceutical companies.

Our program allows faculty and students to develop close working relationships throughout the student's training and provides a high degree of flexibility in designing individual courses of study and research projects. Research interests in the Department include molecular and cellular based investigations into cardiovascular biology, signaling dynamics and regulation involved in cancer, stem cell biology, neuronal communication and differentiation and immune cell activation. Faculty employ a variety of experimental approaches in their research encompassing such techniques as computational and single-cell biophysics of ion channels, ion and protein network signal transduction assays configured using an array of molecular biological, biochemical and cellular methods.

The Department is also home to a recently remodeled animal facility with an adjacent sterile surgical suite and its associated equipment. Individual departmental faculty also maintain research laboratories specific to their own research projects, many of which contain highly specialized, state-of-the-art equipment. Additional resources and specific equipment exist in other University departments located within and outside the Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy.
