For Advisors

IAP students are directly admitted international students who elect to receive: additional support through UOPI.  They follow standard placements and courses in your program, with one exception:   During their first two terms they will enroll in UOPI 72 Live, Learn, Grow II and UOPI 73 Live, Learn, Grow III.  These are one unit, non-credit bearing courses.   The units count toward full time status, however, so advisers should be aware of the potential for overloading.

Note: IAP students enter in Fall, Spring and Summer.  This presents some advising challenges for first year experience courses.

Advising for IAP students FAQs
Q: How do I determine if a student is in the Integrated Accelerator?
A: The accelerator shows up in the concentration field in Degreeworks as SLIA; and in the minor field on the transcript

Q: The section of UOPI 73 conflicts with a required course in the student's major; what should I do?
A: UOPI students are required to enroll in UOPI 73.

Q: How can I determine if a student is first or second term IAP?
A: Students enroll through UOPI in Fall, Spring and Summer.  Their student record will show their first term on campus.

Q: My advisee failed Live, Learn, Grow 2.  Does the student have to repeat the course?
A. No, the student should enroll in the second course in the sequence, Live, Learn, Grow 3

Q: My advisee wants to change majors.  Can she/he do that while in the accelerator?
A: Students have the right to change their major. Changing an international student's major may lengthen the time to degree and may also require the approval of an international students' home government or other external scholarship.  Both changes need to be approved and updated on the student's I-20 document through IPS.  To change an IAP students major, use the UOPI change of program form.
