href=\"https:\/\/www.pacific.edu\/blog\/2021\/07\/11\/civil-rights-icon-dolores-huerta-has-a-message-for-young-people-who-want-to-make-an-impact\/\">iconic labor and women\u2019s rights activist Dolores Huerta<\/a> returned to University of the Pacific, her alma mater, with a strong message of empowerment for students. At the end of her speech, she asked the audience to stand and repeat after her:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-plain\"><em><strong>\u201cWho\u2019s got the power?!\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right is-style-plain\"><em><strong>\u201cWe\u2019ve got the power!\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-plain\"><strong><em>\u201cWhat kind of power?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right is-style-plain\"><em><strong>\u201cPeople power!\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-plain\"><strong><em>\u201c\u00a1S\u00ed se puede!\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right is-style-plain\"><strong><em>\u201c\u00a1S\u00ed se puede!\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cS\u00ed se puede,\u201d a Spanish phrase which roughly translates to \u201cYes we can!\u201d in English, has long been Huerta\u2019s motto, with which she empowers others to make a difference. Her passion for social justice has made Huerta nothing less than a superhero for countless activists not only in the local community, but across the country and throughout the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Huerta&#8217;s Stockton roots<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Growing up in south Stockton, Huerta received her teaching credential from Delta College (then part of Pacific) and taught the children of farmworkers in the local community. Witnessing her students\u2019 hunger every day inspired her to take action and organize farm workers to fight for fair wages. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Huerta began her career in activism by founding the Stockton chapter of the Community Service Organization (CSO). Through CSO, she met prominent activist C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez and worked with him to start the United Farm Workers union, a national organization that continues to champion labor reform for farm workers today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStockton is where I learned about civil rights,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout her speech, Huerta emphasized the importance of caring for your community and staying politically engaged to enact change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are one human race,\u201d Huerta said. \u201cThe only way we have survived on planet Earth is because we have been taking care of each other\u2026and that is what we have to do right now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some of our favorite moments and key takeaways from her campus visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Take pride in your community<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Huerta encouraged students to immerse themselves in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacific.edu\/blog\/tag\/stockton\/\">the Stockton community<\/a> and appreciate the cultural contributions of the city\u2019s diverse population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are thankful for our diversity in the Central Valley of California,\u201d Huerta said. \u201cIt gave us that knowledge that we needed about music and about culture. There&#8217;s so much richness here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Take care of each other<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>During her speech, Huerta asked the audience members to take the hand of the person on their left, then on their right, to emphasize the importance of putting human connection and compassion at the center of social justice work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo save our country, to save our democracy, is to take care of each other,\u201d she stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Be engaged<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Above all else, Huerta encourages young people to take action and be strong defenders of democracy. With midterms elections coming up this November, Huerta reminded the audience to exercise their right to vote and bring as many people as possible out to the ballot box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNot enough people are getting out there and knocking on doors,\u201d she said. \u201cWe have the power to change things, but we need to be engaged.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the way, ASUOP and the political science department will be hosting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacific.edu\/event\/youre-invited-make-your-vote-count\">voter registration and information event<\/a> on October 10, so be sure to attend and spread the word!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Hispanic Heritage Month continues through October 15.
