Their responsibilities can vary depending on the company and industry, but the core goal&nbsp;remains&nbsp;the same: connecting a brand with the right audience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Typical responsibilities of marketing managers include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Developing marketing strategies and campaigns\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Conducting market research and analyzing consumer behavior\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Managing brand messaging and positioning\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Collaborating with designers,\u00a0writers\u00a0and digital specialists\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tracking campaign performance and adjusting strategy\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Coordinating marketing across platforms such as social media,\u00a0email\u00a0and advertising\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Today\u2019s marketing managers also work closely with data, digital&nbsp;tools&nbsp;and artificial intelligence. But while technology has changed how marketing&nbsp;operates, the&nbsp;discipline&nbsp;remains&nbsp;focused on people.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUnderstanding consumer emotions, perceptions and behavior continues to be critical to succeeding in marketing,\u201d said Bidisha Burman, associate professor of marketing at&nbsp;Pacific. \u201cA strong marketing manager brings contextual judgment, empathy and ethical reasoning that technology cannot replace.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Marketing manager salary and job outlook<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, careers in marketing leadership offer strong opportunities and competitive salaries. Employment of advertising, promotions and marketing managers is projected to grow 6%&nbsp;through&nbsp;2033, about as fast as the average for all occupations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of May 2024, the median annual salary for marketing managers was $161,030, while advertising and promotions managers earned a median salary of $126,960.&nbsp;Demand for&nbsp;marketing professionals is expected to remain steady as organizations continue competing for attention in increasingly digital and data-driven markets.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How the path to marketing management has evolved<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The journey to becoming a marketing manager has shifted significantly in recent years. While&nbsp;previous&nbsp;generations often followed a linear path of gradually increasing responsibility, today\u2019s marketing professionals are often expected to develop leadership skills much earlier in their careers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat has changed most is the pace at which responsibility and decision-making are expected,\u201d Burman said. \u201cProfessionals are now asked to take on significant responsibility much earlier and success depends on adaptability and continuous learning.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Technology and automation have also expanded the skill set&nbsp;required&nbsp;in marketing roles. Digital analytics, social media&nbsp;platforms&nbsp;and AI-powered tools are now integrated into many marketing strategies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, Burman emphasizes that the human element&nbsp;remains&nbsp;essential.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMarketing is fundamentally human-focused,\u201d she said. \u201cMarketing managers serve as the human in the loop by applying judgment, cultural awareness and ethical decision making.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Skills marketing\u00a0managers need<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Successful marketing managers combine both analytical and creative abilities. The role requires understanding data while also developing compelling narratives that resonate with audiences.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the most valuable skills include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Strategic thinking and problem-solving\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Communication and storytelling\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Data analysis and research\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Collaboration and leadership\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Creativity and innovation\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Burman encourages students to develop these skills through curiosity and initiative.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStudents who succeed in marketing leadership roles often share curiosity, initiative and the confidence to move ideas forward,\u201d she said. \u201cMarketing leadership rewards people who combine analytical thinking with strong communication and follow-through.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why hands-on experience matters<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most important steps toward becoming a marketing manager is gaining real-world experience through internships,&nbsp;projects&nbsp;or collaborative work with organizations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Pacific,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacific.edu\/blog\/2022\/07\/07\/marketing-major-megan-nishimura-25-shares-insights-from-public-relations-internship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">marketing<\/a>&nbsp;students regularly&nbsp;participate&nbsp;in experiential learning opportunities that allow them to apply classroom knowledge to&nbsp;real challenges.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students in marketing courses analyze corporate cases, work with real&nbsp;clients&nbsp;and engage with live data to develop marketing strategies. Projects often involve partnerships with local organizations or participation in campus-wide competitions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These experiences help students develop the combination of analytical thinking,&nbsp;creativity&nbsp;and communication skills&nbsp;required&nbsp;in marketing leadership roles.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStudents take their work into real public-facing environments,\u201d Burman said. \u201cThose experiences often reshape their confidence and help them see themselves as emerging marketing professionals.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Facilities such as collaborative creative spaces and makerspaces also allow students to move ideas from concept to tangible prototypes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Pacific\u00a0graduate\u2019s\u00a0path into marketing<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For many professionals, the journey into marketing management does not follow a straight line.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amber Cooley \u201921, a Pacific marketing graduate and brand strategy manager at health&nbsp;care brand strategy studio Uncommon Bold, discovered her career path through an unexpected connection while working on campus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During her time&nbsp;at&nbsp;Pacific, Cooley worked in the Alumni Relations&nbsp;office. One phone call with a Pacific alum would&nbsp;ultimately change&nbsp;her career direction.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI&nbsp;had the privilege of meeting my current boss through a phone call while working a shift in the Alumni Relations department,\u201d Cooley said. \u201cI didn\u2019t know it at the time, but that call would kickstart my career in marketing.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the conversation, Cooley&nbsp;applied&nbsp;for a content marketing internship at the&nbsp;Uncommon&nbsp;Bold, where she learned&nbsp;about social media marketing, paid advertising, content&nbsp;creation&nbsp;and copywriting.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After&nbsp;Cooley&nbsp;graduated in 2021 with her&nbsp;bachelor\u2019s degree in marketing, she joined the organization full-time and continued building experience in research, data&nbsp;analysis&nbsp;and project coordination.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over time, those experiences helped shape her role in brand strategy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy day-to-day requires me to think strategically and execute creatively,\u201d Cooley said. \u201cI work with designers, copywriters, public relations experts and developers to bring our clients\u2019 brands to life across channels.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Cooley, the key to growing into a marketing leadership role has been developing a multidisciplinary&nbsp;skillset&nbsp;that blends strategy, storytelling,&nbsp;data&nbsp;and design.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBecoming a marketing manager means learning how to collaborate across teams and translate big ideas into a clear actionable plan,\u201d she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why study marketing at Pacific<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For students considering a career in marketing, Pacific\u2019s marketing management&nbsp;degree&nbsp;provides opportunities to build both technical skills and professional confidence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through courses in areas such as digital marketing, marketing research and product innovation, students gain experience working with real data, developing&nbsp;campaigns&nbsp;and solving business challenges.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hands-on&nbsp;learning is a core part of the program. Students often collaborate with organizations such as Visit Stockton on marketing research projects,&nbsp;participate&nbsp;in innovation&nbsp;competitions&nbsp;and pitch ideas to industry professionals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These experiences help students see how marketing concepts translate into real-world impact.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStudents are not just learning theory,\u201d Burman said. \u201cThey are learning how to analyze situations, communicate ideas and take initiative in solving real problems.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That combination of strategy, creativity and hands-on experience prepares graduates to pursue careers in fields such as brand management, digital marketing, market&nbsp;research&nbsp;and advertising.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Starting your path toward marketing leadership<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Becoming a marketing manager does not happen overnight.
